This class is designed for students who have taken a beginning floor loom class, but feel like they need a little help and guided instruction to get started on their first project. We’ll review how to prepare, warp, and weave on a floor loom, using the back to front method of winding the warp on the loom. Students will weave two dishtowels in 8/2 cotton using a pattern of their choosing, or electing one from several that will be available in class. We’ll use these patterns as a starting point, but will talk about how to adjust and customize patterns. We’ll cover project planning, including determining appropriate sett for your weave structure, and calculating warp and weft needed.
The class is intended for students who don’t have a loom and need to weave in the DFG Fiber Studio, as well as students who have looms available at home. The first day of class will be for all students, and will discuss project planning, pattern selection, yarn colors, and other details pertinent to the student’s chosen project. The second day of class is for students who will be weaving on a floor loom in the Studio to have guidance while winding their warp and preparing the loom for weaving. At-home students are welcome to join us in the Studio on Day 2 if they would like help winding their warp. All students will need to plan on individual weaving time to finish their project, whether they are weaving at home or in the Studio. The instructor will schedule open studio hours for students to come in and weave, or to come in and ask questions as needed. One or two additional 2-hour class sessions will be scheduled to discuss hemming, wet finishing, and other topics once students are done weaving. These will be scheduled based on student and instructor availability.
