~ 50 Years and Beyond
The Duluth Fiber Guild will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023 and the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee is working on activities for that whole year. As part of those activities, at least three exciting opportunities for exhibits to show our members’ work to the public are being pursued.
- The Tweed Museum of Art (University of Minnesota -Duluth)
- The MacRostie Art Center (Grand Rapids)
- The Textile Center and Minnesota Weavers Guild (in the Twin Cities)
- The Nordic Center (downtown Duluth)
The shows will have a broad focus and will be juried. They are described below. Refer to the DFG website for further updates and details.
The committee invites you to enter some of your work in the appropriate venue. This early announcement will hopefully give you time to complete your fiber works before the juried deadlines.
Besides the call for exhibit entries, we also need volunteers to help with various aspects of prepping for the exhibits. We need folks to be “gophers” and take directions, as well as those who may have had some experience in setting up shows.

“Duluth Fiber Guild- 50 Years and Beyond”
The Duluth Fiber Guild will start 2023 with a juried exhibit at the Tweed Museum of Art. It will include a celebration of Janet Meany’s work as a fiber artist and as our very first guild president and major supporter. We will have a room dedicated to her work, her teaching and her enormous influence on the fiber community in Duluth. Another room will contain an exhibit of member works, both contemporary and historical. Any item may be entered that has been created in the last 50 years. Pieces will need to be completed and submitted by Sept 2022. Portions of this exhibit will move to the MacRostie Art Center for a summer showing.

“Janet Meany Retrospective Show”
The 2023 50th Anniversary celebration of the DFG gives us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate one of our founders, Janet Meany. We are mounting a retrospective of Janet’s weavings and paintings to exhibit at the Textile Center/Weavers Guild of MN. If you have a piece of Janet’s work that you would like to share for exhibit, please contact Katie Chmielewski at firstname.lastname@example.org soon.

“Nordic Reflections in Fiber – Duluth Fiber Guild”
This juried exhibit will be at the Nordic Center in Duluth as part of the year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Duluth Fiber Guild in 2023. The Nordic Center, a gallery venue in downtown Duluth, is a warm and inclusive place for community engagement in traditional, contemporary and emerging Nordic culture. We invite submissions by members of the Guild who have or will create fiber projects that reflect your personal interpretation of Nordic inspiration, design or technique. In preparing your submission of 1 – 3 items, each participant must provide a brief bio and artist statement. Also include a digital image and one sentence description of each work. The submission deadline for the fiber projects will be May 2023.
