Dating back to the early Iron Age, card woven bands were used to create the starting and selvedge bands for warp-weighted looms. Other uses included adding decorative bands to woven textiles and as independent pieces. In this class we will create bands approx ⅜-¾” wide and 24”-36” long. Students will have a variety of patterns to choose from. Cards used in class will be available for purchase $8-12 per set. Students will be contacted prior to the class regarding color and pattern options. Youth age 8-18 can enroll if accompanied by an enrolled adult.
Materials to bring to class: Please bring scissors to class. We will also have scissors available if you need to borrow some.

Instructor Bio: Josie learned card weaving at Lake Superior Traditional Ways Gathering in 2015. She has been intrigued by discovering new (and old) uses for bands, including as a pre-elastic and zipper solution for traditional clothing. She looks forward to sharing how card weaving feels like a kind of magic as you watch the pattern emerge in the creation of a strong, useful, and beautiful item.
